The Weight and Wonder of Being a Dad
Share
“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.” Psalm 127:3
The moment they put that child in your arms something shifts in you that does not shift back.
The world gets bigger and smaller at the same time.
Bigger because the stakes just multiplied.
Smaller because nothing outside of that moment seemed to matter anymore.
That is the wonder. And it never fully goes away.
But neither does the weight.
The weight of knowing that a person is watching everything you do and learning from it whether you intend to teach or not.
The weight of providing not just financially but emotionally, spiritually, and in presence.
The weight of knowing that the man you are becoming is directly shaping the people they are becoming.
That is not pressure to perform, it’s the purpose to pursue.
Most men underestimate both.
They underestimate the wonder because the daily grind of fatherhood is not always cinematic.
It is diapers and dinner and discipline and showing up when you are depleted.
It is the unglamorous and the repetitive and the thankless moments that make up the majority of the job.
But those moments are the job, and they are building something eternal.
Your child does not need a perfect father, they need a present one.
One who shows up in the ordinary moments with enough intention to make them feel like the most important thing in the room.
Because to God they are a heritage. A reward. Not an obligation.
Let that change how you see them today.
The weight is real. Carry it faithfully.
The wonder is real. Do not let the weight make you miss it.
Let’s Pray
God, thank You for trusting me with my children.
Give me eyes to see them the way You see them, as a heritage and not a responsibility to manage.
Where the weight has made me distant, draw me back.
Where the grind has made me miss the wonder, slow me down.
Make me a father who carries the weight faithfully and receives the wonder gratefully.
I do not take lightly what You have placed in my hands.
Help me to be worthy of it.
